Luxor is a city in Upper Egypt (southern) and the capital of Luxor Governorate. As the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes (the capital of Greater Egypt during the New Kingdom), Luxor is often described as “the world’s greatest open-air museum”, with the ruins of the temple complexes of Karnak and Luxor standing within the modern city. Immediately across the Nile lie the monuments, temples and tombs on the river’s West Bank, which includes the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. Thousands of international tourists arrive each year to visit these monuments.
